US automakers have scored poorly in a recent US environmental study, thanks to their gas-guzzling, pollution-spewing light trucks. Inspite of touting green thumbs, the automakers DaimlerChrysler AG, Ford Motor Co and General Motors Corp were ranked second, third and fourth `worst’ in the pollution performance of their 1998 model-year vehicles. The vista was eye-grabbing. Winding our way through the high country of California a€™s Sierras, fellow auto writer Russ Heaps and I took in the view that stretched for miles before us. To listen to Doug Frasher (pronounced “Frasier”) talk about automobile design is to hear his passion for his work. The Chief Designer, Advance Concept Design uses words like, “mystical,” “sensitivity,” and “emotion,” to describe the design process. Southern California has been a driving force toward the electric and alternative fuel vehicles of the future since the debut of the GM’s concept electric car, the Impact, at the 1990 L.A. Auto Show. The common link between almost all manufacturers at this year’s show was their development of “green” automobiles- vehicles that are environmentally friendly.
