<p><strong>First there was the 2011 Ford Mustang V-6. Then came the 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. And just when one wondered what more could Ford do with its precocious pony car, along comes the new 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 with an all-new all-aluminum engine &#8220;inspired&#8221;, they say, by the engine from the exotic Ford GT.<span id="more-17858"></span><a href="http://www.autoprimenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/images3.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-17860" title="ford" src="http://www.autoprimenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/images3.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="183" /></a></p>
<p>Ford&#8217;s Special Vehicle Team made a number of changes to the Mustang-based Shelby, including a stiffer chassis for the convertible that, according to Ford, makes the topless GT500 handle like a sports car instead of a &#8220;cruiser.&#8221;</p>
<p>By far the most important new element, however, is the new engine. Easily recognized by its blue cam covers and silver supercharger, the 5.4-liter V-8 is rated at 550 horsepower, ten more than its predecessor. That&#8217;s hardly the engine&#8217;s most important new attribute. One other is that the engine is 102 pounds lighter than the engine in the 2009 Shelby GT500, not only decreasing the weight of the vehicle overall but more importantly, reducing weight over the front axle front axle and decreasing its contribution towards understeer.</p>
<p>The other is that while the Shelby GT500&#8242;s engine&#8217;s peak torque remains the same at 510 lb-ft, it hits 80 percent of its maximum torque output at 1750 rpm and never falls below that all the way to fuel cutoff at 6250 rpm. The practical result, of course, should be remarkable&#8211;to say the least&#8211; flexibility around town or on the track.<a href="http://www.autoprimenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2012-Shelby-GT-5001.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-17861" title="2012-Shelby-GT-500" src="http://www.autoprimenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/2012-Shelby-GT-5001.jpg" alt="" width="476" height="339" /></a></p>
<p>The GT500&#8242;s engine was optimized for high rpm from the start. Like its predecessor, it has six-bolt billet mains. It uses, noted Kelly Baldori, chief functional engineer for the engine, in a presentation yesterday, &#8220;structural webbing throughout the engine to improve torsional stiffness and also the modal response.&#8221; Another feature of the engine is larger drainback holes for oil to return to the oil sump, plus the same kind of attention to windage as the new 5.0-liter engine. Ford also increased the effectiveness of the intercooler by 40 percent, which is huge.</p>
<p>The really major development, however, is the cylinder lining coating that&#8217;s applied by a Ford-patented Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA). As Baldori explains, the process &#8220;reduces friction, reduces wear and it increases cooling efficiency because you no longer have an iron cylinder liner in between the piston and the block.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;A steel wire is melted via a combined plasma of hydrogen and argon gas, along with electricity and air. It then sprays that 1010 wire at about 35,000 degrees [Fahrenheit] onto the cylinder liner, and then it&#8217;s finally honed and that&#8217;s what the piston rides up and down in.&#8221;</p>
<p>The PTWA alone reduces the weight of the engine by eight pounds and a half pounds.</strong></p>

<p>&#8220;It was very much on purpose because this engine is based on the GT40 [sic] engine and he have all the lessons learned in the full aluminium [sic, British usage] engine and therefore we said also the GT40 [sic...old habits die hard] looks good with the blue covers and silver booster. So we said why not doing this on the Shelby GT500, on the new one that we see the link to the GT engine. And also, we like it as it is.&#8221;</p>
<p>We like how it looks too. And we think we&#8217;ll like how it performs even better.</p>

<p><strong>Continued demand for a “Super Snake” post title package has led Shelby Automobiles to unveil a new program to turn a limited number of 2010 Ford Shelby GT500s into Shelby super cars. The Super Snake package will include enhancements to the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500’s handling, styling and power; output ratings will range from 630 to over 725 horsepower. Exclusivity will be assured as a limited number of Super Snakes will be built at the Shelby Autos facility in Las Vegas or one of the Mod Shops, beginning in August 2009.</p>

<p><strong>The main attraction at this year’s Chicago Auto Show was the new and improved Ford Shelby GT500 which will be available to the public next year.</p>
<p>Among the many improvements is a new 5.4-litre aluminum engine to replace the older iron one that also had the same displacement capacity. According to Ford, this helped them shave off 50kg from the car’s gross weight. This new engine outputs 550-hp of power and 510-lb/ft of torque which is 10 more hp of power than the older engine. Power-to-weight ratio of the car will of course be significantly higher than its predecessor. This engine is also more fuel efficient than its predecessor’s one.<span id="more-17841"></span></strong></p>

<p><strong>The car also comes with an optional SVT performance package which reduces the car’s weight even further with different wheels, tyres, and a host of other tweaks and upgrades to improve the GT500’s performance. Standard features include fold-down rear headrests for improved rearward visibility, high-intensity discharge headlights, integrated spotter mirror in the passenger side mirror and Ford’s programmable MyKey if you don’t want your kids to go overboard by driving too fast or cranking the volume to full.<br />

<p><strong>Like its lesser V-6 and V-8 siblings, the Mustang&#8217;s ripsnorting Shelby GT500 variant received its own tweaks for 2011. They&#8217;re relatively slight, compared with the vastly upgraded drivetrains on the V-6 and V-8 &#8216;Stangs. The biggest news is gas mileage: Thanks mostly to new aluminum engine construction, which saves some 100 pounds versus the 2010 GT500&#8242;s iron-block supercharged V-8, Ford expects the Shelby to earn an EPA rating of 15/23 mpg city/highway. That&#8217;s up from last year&#8217;s 14/22 mpg, and it keeps the car from incurring last year&#8217;s $1,000 gas-guzzler tax.<span id="more-17836"></span></strong></p>

<p><strong>Improved exhaust flow adds 10 horsepower for a total of 550 hp at 6,200 rpm. Torque remains the same, with 510 pounds-feet on tap at 4,500 rpm. Disregarding the old days of gross horsepower ratings, this ties the Ford GT for the most horsepower any factory car from Dearborn has ever produced.</p>
<p>Other changes include new electric power steering, which Ford says delivers improved driving dynamics and steering feel over last year&#8217;s hydraulic steering. It also helps with fuel efficiency, as there&#8217;s no more hydraulic steering pump dragging on the engine. Additional insulation reduces road noise some 20 percent versus the outgoing Shelby, according to Ford. Nineteen-inch wheels and xenon headlights were previously optional; both are now standard. Ford&#8217;s MyKey system, which allows parents to place driving limits on their teen drivers, is also included. (MyKey or not, though, we should add that teenagers and GT500s seem like a dubious combination.)</p>
<p>Available as a coupe or convertible, the Shelby GT500 will go on sale in the spring. Prices have yet to be announced, but we&#8217;d expect the car to start somewhere near the 2010 model&#8217;s $46,725 base sticker.</p>

The Super Snake also comes with a variety of other performance, handling and cosmetic changes including badging, gauge pod, 20&#8243; Alcoa wheels, fibreglass ram-air Super Snake hood, stripes, carbon fiber front splitter and skirts, larger 6-piston Baer brakes, front and rear brake cooling ducts, complete track setup suspension, aluminum driveshaft, 3.73 differential gears and cat-back exhaust system.</p>
<p>For the 2010 model year, the Shelby Mustang GT500 was redesigned along with the base Ford Mustang. As with the 2007–09 GT500, the 2010 includes unique front and rear fascias, hood with functional vents and unique rear spoiler. The rear spoiler includes a functional Gurney flap. Along with new exterior colors, customers have the option of extending the exterior stripes onto the seats. Production was limited to 2000 units.<br />
The 5.4 L engines&#8217;s power output was increased to 540 horsepower (403 kW) and 510 lb·ft (690 N·m) of torque with the addition of a cold air intake similar to the 08/09 GT500KR and includes a knock sensor to protect the engine if lower octane fuel is used. The 2010 GT500&#8242;s fuel efficiency increased by 2 miles per gallon.<br />
SVT re-tuned the coupe&#8217;s suspension and worked with Goodyear on 19&#8243; tires with new construction, compound and tread pattern. The coupe&#8217;s 19&#8243; wheels are forged for a reduction in unsprung weight. The convertible retained the 18&#8243; wheels offered on the 2007–09 GT500.</strong></p>

<p>For 1967, the GT 350 carried over the K-Code high performance 289 with a &#8216;COBRA&#8217; aluminum hi-rise. The GT 500 was added to the lineup, equipped with the 428 Police Interceptor. These later cars carried over few of the performance modifications of the 1965–66 GT350s, although they did feature more cosmetic changes.<span id="more-17826"></span></strong></p>

<p><strong>In September 1967, production was moved to the A.O. Smith Company of Ionia, Michigan, under Ford control. Shelby American had substantially less involvement after this time.</p>
<p>For 1968, the Cobra name was applied to both models, and they were now marketed as the Shelby Cobra GT 350 and the Shelby Cobra GT 500. In February 1968, the Cobra GT 500-KR &#8220;King of the Road&#8221; debuted; under the hood was a 428 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V8 which was rated at 335 horsepower (250 kW).</p>
<p>Shelby and Ford returned for the 2007 model year with the Shelby GT500. Introduced at the 2003 New York International Auto Show, the GT500 uses a 5.4 L (330 CID) Modular 500 hp (370 kW) supercharged V8. Features include the Tremec TR-6060 6-speed manual transmission, suspension tuning, a body kit, and 18 inch wheels.</p>
<p>A collaboration of Ford&#8217;s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) and Carroll Shelby, the GT500 was produced in limited quantity for three years (approximately 10,000 units per year) on the line at Ford&#8217;s Flat Rock, Michigan (AutoAlliance) assembly facility.</p>
<p>Ford&#8217;s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) also released a small series (687 units) of GT500 using the S/C from Saleen. These cars had the 5.4L engine and were equipped with a 3.55:1 final drive. The GT500 has 500 hp (373 kW) @ 6000 rpm and 480 lb·ft (650 N·m) of torque @ 4500 rpm.<br />

The 2012 Ford Mustang GT Blue Angels Edition is the culmination of the numerous modern concepts that can be incorporated into the Mustang design. The newly designed car is scheduled for auction at the Gathering of Eagles charity auction during the Experimental Aircraft Association 2011 AirVenture Oshkosh, the world’s greatest aviation celebration. Proceeds of the auction are intended for the Young Eagles Organization.<br />

<p><strong>This Ford Mustang GT Blue Angels Edition is a tribute to the 100 years of naval aviation and its design was inspired by the F-18 Hornet jet used by the naval aviation performance demonstration team. The Blue Angels crest is on the car’s exterior and the yellow accents from the sides to the rear spoiler are derived from the famed aircraft. The Blue Angels crest is also stitched in the leather Recaro racing seats accented by the offset stripes typically found in pilot flight suits.</p>
