It seems that few SUV owners use their vehicles for their original purpose – taking them off-road or at least off-pavement. When I spent some time behind the wheel of a 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5, it seemed only logical to experience the vehicle in both settings. On Friday night, we braved the traffic and headed about three hours north of Los Angeles to Ridgecrest. Over 40 years before the term was popular, this 1946 Mercury woodie wagon was transformed into one of the first sport utility vehicles, used for off-road expeditions by nature photographer Don Bleitz. Bleitz, often referred to as the twentieth century John James Audubon, was known for his bird photography published in popular magazines including the Saturday Evening Post. After purchasing the vehicle in 1946, he first had it outfitted with a Marmon-Herrington four-wheel drive system and then took it to Coachcraft of Hollywood for further modifications for camping. At first glance, the new Outlander “generation 2″ will recognize that it takes the shell-type “jet fighter” in inverted trapezoidal already seen on the Colt and Lancer. Design mark and may not appeal, but has the merit of giving personality and dynamism to the car … When so many manufacturers call “new model” a simple change in the form of fog lights (we exaggerate only slightly), l the effort is commendable. In addition to the front, the design of the car is also changing – but more subtly – in mirrors or tailgate.
