First there was the 2011 Ford Mustang V-6. Then came the 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0. And just when one wondered what more could Ford do with its precocious pony car, along comes the new 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 with an all-new all-aluminum engine “inspired”, they say, by the engine from the exotic Ford GT. Continued demand for a “Super Snake” post title package has led Shelby Automobiles to unveil a new program to turn a limited number of 2010 Ford Shelby GT500s into Shelby super cars. The Super Snake package will include enhancements to the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500’s handling, styling and power; output ratings will range from 630 to over 725 horsepower. Exclusivity will be assured as a limited number of Super Snakes will be built at the Shelby Autos facility in Las Vegas or one of the Mod Shops, beginning in August 2009.

“We take great pride in engineering fast, fun cars that people love to drive,” said Carroll Shelby. “Over the past 12 months, my team of hot rodders was hard at work on a Super Snake package for the next generation GT500. Every lesson we learned kicking the competition around on the track over the past two years has been poured into this new car to keep Shelby owners out front.” Read the rest of this entry »

The main attraction at this year’s Chicago Auto Show was the new and improved Ford Shelby GT500 which will be available to the public next year.

Among the many improvements is a new 5.4-litre aluminum engine to replace the older iron one that also had the same displacement capacity. According to Ford, this helped them shave off 50kg from the car’s gross weight. This new engine outputs 550-hp of power and 510-lb/ft of torque which is 10 more hp of power than the older engine. Power-to-weight ratio of the car will of course be significantly higher than its predecessor. This engine is also more fuel efficient than its predecessor’s one. Read the rest of this entry »

Like its lesser V-6 and V-8 siblings, the Mustang’s ripsnorting Shelby GT500 variant received its own tweaks for 2011. They’re relatively slight, compared with the vastly upgraded drivetrains on the V-6 and V-8 ‘Stangs. The biggest news is gas mileage: Thanks mostly to new aluminum engine construction, which saves some 100 pounds versus the 2010 GT500′s iron-block supercharged V-8, Ford expects the Shelby to earn an EPA rating of 15/23 mpg city/highway. That’s up from last year’s 14/22 mpg, and it keeps the car from incurring last year’s $1,000 gas-guzzler tax. Read the rest of this entry »

Starting in 2008, previous 2007 Shelby GT500 Mustangs could be sent to Carroll Shelby’s Special Performance Plant in Las Vegas Nevada to be rebuilt into a Super Snake, for an additional cost of $27,995. The Super Snake will offer a 605 hp (451 kW) (at the engine) 5.4 L. A Kenne Bell twin-screw supercharged version with “over 725 hp” will also be available, without warranty and offer a 0–60 mph runs in 3.5 to 3.7 seconds. The Super Snake is inspired by the 1967 GT500 Super Snake, a car made by Carroll Shelby for Goodyear Tires. Read the rest of this entry »

The Shelby Mustang is a high performance variant of the Ford Mustang which was built by Shelby American from 1965 through 1970. Following the introduction of the fifth generation Ford Mustang, the Shelby nameplate was revived in 2007 for new high performance versions of the Mustang.

For 1967, the GT 350 carried over the K-Code high performance 289 with a ‘COBRA’ aluminum hi-rise. The GT 500 was added to the lineup, equipped with the 428 Police Interceptor. These later cars carried over few of the performance modifications of the 1965–66 GT350s, although they did feature more cosmetic changes. Read the rest of this entry »

With shaved pounds and a supercharged engine, the Ford Shelby GT500 has the stellar performance to complement its stunning piece of design. Lighter by a little over 100 pounds (with the coupe weighing 3,820 pounds and the convertible packing in 3,969 pounds) yet more balanced and fuel-efficient, the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 is a noteworthy supercar.

Here’s a couple of concept we wish Ford would consider greenlighting to production asap.

Ford’s Australian division has launched two “Max Max” concept cars at the Melbourne Motor Show, inspired by the Ford XB Falcon Interceptor and Pursuit Special cars seen in the 1979 film Max Max.

The XB Falcon-based vehicles became as famous as the post-apocalyptic movie itself, and with a fourth entry in the franchise — Mad Max 4: Fury Road — in the works, Top Gear Australia challenged designers to build a modern-day interpretation of those cars. The concept cars seen in the video below represent the work of designers Nima Nourian and Simon Brook.
